A good three points against a Brentford side that didn't make it easy for Wolves. It's often mentioned on media sites and newspapers how much possession a team has had in a game. Brentford had plenty of it, especially with their main playermaker Ryan Woods pulling the strings. But at the end of the day it always comes down to goals.
The performance today was a different one to the one on show at Newcastle last weekend. Brentford played with only one up top and packed their midfield, making it difficult for Wolves to string a few passes together, especially in the first half. Our main threat in the first half in my opinion was Teixeira, he caused no end of problems when he had the ball, he goes one way and often teases the defenders. It's often hit and miss with him, but today we saw quite a few pluses from him. He was unlucky not to get a penalty in the half after he was shoved over. Both keeper's had very little to do, but both dealt with the threat, Ikeme with one decent save down to his left and the Brenford keeper not really troubled with the efforts from Costa and Edwards.
I mentioned at the game that with the way Wolves are set up, more often than not 4-3-3, our full backs get exposed, Borthwick-Jackson numerous occasions left two on one. His play wasn't as good as it has been, but that can be said about quite a few of his team-mates, poor passes that were intended for a Wolves player. Pretty even first half and scoreline about right.
Wolves were out the blocks quickly at the start of the second half, one thing missing from the first half was a Wolves player getting a foot in to win the ball, that's exactly what Costa did for the first goal, won it in the Wolves half, sprinted away from Woods to set up Teixeira for his first goal. A second goal for Teixeira, good when these go in for your side, but i think the Brentford keeper Bentley could have done better.
I've said before, and so have many others down the years that 2-0 is a dangerous scoreline to have, if the opposition scores as Brentford did it often, as in Wolves case today means dropping deeper and deeper and backs to the wall. From where i was, Ikeme got a hand to Kaikai's effort, but it seemed to me he got too much behind it. Only fault really was how much time he had.
It was a relief to see sub Cavaleiro increase the Wolves lead to 3-1 after good work from Bodvarsson. I bet Vibe will be kicking himself at squandering the header at 2-1. Brentford also had a couple of shouts for a penalty, ref didn't want to give one today.
The victory achieved with Zenga keeping the same starting line-up as the one at Newcastle last weekend. Hopefully more of the same for the Wigan game.
