A men against boys performance yet again from Wolves last night. Right from the off the standard was set, it reminded me of an attack against defence type training session. Having seen the likes of George Friend and Adomah on numerous occasions, the lesson should always be never to give these players any time on the ball at all, this for me again for me highlighted the stand off mentality that Wolves often play with. Neither Iorfa or Byrne could get near the two players mentioned above.
I remember points made on various forums about Sigurdarson running about, closing down the opposition etc, well i didn't see any of that at all from him or his team-mates on the pitch. Playing a lone striker is all very well and good if he has the support, lumping it for him is no good at all.
The ball again from a Wolves perspective was like a hot potato, McDonald often gets praised for picking a pass, but he was for me out of his depth against a 'Boro side that never got out of second gear. The opening goal for the home side was poor from a Wolves perspective, Dominic Iorfa may get the blame, but i also look at Ikeme's contribution, one of these days a keeper will actually try and command his six yard area a bit better. Going back to Iorfa, the player had two 'Boro players on him, not one centre-half giving him any support.
Going in at 1-0 down at half-time and you think we have a chance, well the standard was already set in the first half. If i was a 'Boro fan i'd be disappointed with the way Jordan Rhodes failed to increase their lead with the header Ikeme tipped over early in the second half. It was only a matter of time before Wolves conceded again, another one for Ramirez, again for me i hate the stand off mentality of players.
At 1-0 down, you expect a response, at 2-0, you just think the margin of defeat is going to increase. When Jackett finally made changes, it was too little too late for me, both Price and Mason showed more in their little time on the pitch than the majority of their team-mates did all game. Wolves actually looked to attack. We did pull the goal back, Mason again, but credited with a Gibson own goal. So late in the game, a goal back and i was hoping we would throw the sink at 'Boro, but one poor free-kick and that was it.
Summing up that performance, not good enough and highlighted by a pathetic attempt of a diving header on the edge of the 'Boro box by Coady in the second half, had me and others in hysterics. Trying to contain the opposition is one thing, but setting up and inviting pressure is another.
People often point to the quality of the opposition, strange how it was never even mentioned after the Derby game.
My thoughts on another Wolves defeat and fully deserved as well. A near five hour journey up and nearly four hour journey on the way back........at least we got a £5 food and drink voucher
