Another game and another woeful performance from a Wolves side lacking players willing to fight for the cause. I've questioned in recent weeks what tactics does Kenny Jackett have Wolves playing? Again today not a lot was on show, from Ikeme the quick long ball either out of his hands or on the ground. Even with the ball at their feet, each and every Wolves player up until Mason came on treated like something they didn't want to have. The side looks like eleven strangers that have been put together overnight for a pub team.
Preston, just like Bolton before them were able to play through Wolves, put the ball into the channels and their wide player, especially on Doherty's side had the beating of him. Wolves as a defensive unit got done by schoolboy defending, trying to play offside for the first, Gallagher easily beating the offside trap to open the scoring.
At no time after going 1-0 down did i feel confident that Wolves could get back in the game, too many slack passes, no back up for Sigurdarson, well not until Mason came. The second goal for me was the clincher, Ikeme has to do better than he did for it, why give Danny Batth the call to leave it? he has to get rid, not give it straight back and allow Reach to score.
It's often mentioned that 2-0 is a dangerous score to have in football, Wolves getting one back through sub Mason gave Wolves hope, but again looking back, Wolves didn't push hard enough for a second. Kenny Jackett bringing on Rowe to replace Saville summed it up for me, Le Fondre should at least have been given a chance.
The Wolves head coach can point to injuries all he likes, state of the pitch and much more, but those players he has picked aren't pulling their weight. It has taken an injury to James Henry for Byrne to get a look in today, from a free-kick in the first half, which bar Mason's goal was our only real effort on target.
I'm trying to work out how so many of the Wolves side fail the basics, delivery from free-kicks, excluding Byrne's one, that fail to beat the first defender. What the hell do these players do in training? Before the game kicks off, all players are involved in playing the ball to feet, during the game it's often lump it, or given away. It's how Wolves respond at Huddersfield next week, but on today's showing i won't give us much hope.
