An enjoyable day out despite the 1-0 defeat and the hold up on the motorway on the way home. Wolves might be able to play with the defence and midfield sitting deep and inviting pressure, but against premier league opponents one piece of skill was going to win it. I don't think Wolves played badly, we actually started the better of the two sides. It was a surprise to me and others to see van La Parra start, but the opening ten minutes or so he got a couple of decent crosses in from the right.
Slowly, but surely though West Ham got their feet into the game and Ikeme was called upon to make two important saves, turning one chance away for a corner and tipping Jenkinson's effort over the bar. Along with Ikeme, i think Coady was the stand out player for Wolves, putting in challenges and trying to get Wolves moving on the front foot. No goals at the break, but West Ham with the two chances i mentioned and for Wolves an half chance that fell to Sigurdarson that he put wide.
Games like this often are decided by one goal and credit to Jelavic for this, but just before it Edwards pulled out of a 50/50 challenge, moments like that cost you.
Wolves up top really offered very little in the time Sigurdarson was on the pitch, like a lot of Wolves forwards, he was living off scraps, he won a few headers, but no one to get on the end of the flick on. Zyro also won a fair few headers, started his first game ok, decent delivery from a couple of corners and also tracked back. Against championship opposition we will see what he has to offer.
The introduction of Le Fondre gave Wolves a different option, it was sad to see Sigurdarson stretchered off, no one around him and it looked pretty serious. Le Fondre was involved in Wolves best play of the game and if only he had got on the end of his chance better, Wolves may still be in the cup. Fine margins in football and this chance is the one i look back on in the game and think if only. There's no shame in losing the game as Wolves did, back to league action on Tuesday.
