A good day out, started off with a stop off in Ashton. A busy day for the town as they not only had to cater for Wolves fans, but also horse racing fans going to nearby Haydock Park.
On to the game itself, a minute's silence in remembrance of the 30th anniversary of the Bradford Fire spoilt by fans still in the concourses. More should be done, ie speakers to let fans that don't know that this was happening.
The pitch wasn't the greatest and cut up easily with players often losing their footing. The main threat from the home side was often the corners from Pennant. Wolves like in other games invite pressure on themselves and Wigan seemed to exploit both flanks. This was often down to both Sako and Edwards sitting more narrow in the midfield.
Wolves scored with probably our only meaningful attack of the first half, Afobe finishing off Sako's free-kick at the far post. Sako again for me often looked off the pace and maybe still struggling with the injury he was doubtful with in midweek.
Chances in the second half and Wolves had three decent ones, Afobe's disallowed effort, Edwards header that Carson did well to keep out and Dicko's chance. Wigan also had the Kim effort disallowed for offside. For a side fighting for their lives Wigan were often restricted to trying their luck from distance and rarely troubling Kuszczak. Even with time running out they decided to move MaGuire up top and also Carson getting forward for a corner.
The game was at times lived on the edge with challenges going in. McClean will rue his tangle with Wolves forward Dicko. Got a booking and later sent off for a poor challenge on Stearman. At least Wolves players showed their passion in showing their disgust at the Wigan player for his challenge.
Kevin McDonald tried to get Wolves going but was often fouled on numerous occasions. At the back Ebanks-Landell did what he had to, won headers, got his challenges in dealt with what was thrown at him.
A clean sheet and three points, onto trying to get a win next week against Millwall and then hoping results go our way.
